Veteran Indian actor Om Puri passed away after suffering a massive heart attack early on the morning of 6 January 2017 at his residence in Andheri. He was 66. A pioneer in parallel cinema, featured in films like 'Ardh Satya', 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' and 'Mirch Masala'. More recently, he was seen in the movies, 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and 'Ghayal Once Again'.
Born on October 18, 1950, hailing from Ambala in Haryana, Om Puri made his film debut in 1976 with the Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal. An alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India as well as National School of Drama, Puri worked in acclaimed films like Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982), Mirch Masala (1986) and Dharavi (1992). Puri was critically acclaimed for his performances in Aakrosh (1980), Ardh Satya (1982) for which he got the National Film Award for Best Actor. In following years he appered in number of movies like Maachis (1996), Gupt (1997), Dhoop (2003) etc.
Om Puri equally contributed in television industry and worked in notable television serials including Bharat Ek Khoj, Yatra, Mr. Yogi, Kakaji Kahin, Sea Hawks, Antaral to name few. His credits also include appearances in American films. Apart from serious roles, he will be also remembered for his memorable comic roles in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002) and Malamaal Weekly (2006). A versatile actor he looked genuine either in serious or comic character roles. In his long acting career he worked with many big names of Bollywood and Hollywood. He was seen in films like Singh Is Kinng, Billu, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Ghayal Once Again.
